What medicinal infusions can be prepared from Juniper?
Juniper has been a recognized culinary spice and seasoning since the days when food was prepared exclusively from natural products, including those obtained from the hunt. But few people are familiar with the medicinal properties of Juniper, the fruits of which (cone-berries) are a recognized diuretic. If it is possible to collect Juniper berries for the preparation of seasonings, it is worth collecting and making medicinal preparations of Juniper berries for cases of ailments associated with the use of diuretics.
The diuretic properties of Juniper fruits are well manifested in infusions that can be taken for diseases of the kidneys and urinary tract, in case of edema with functional disorders of the urinary system and pregnancy, with inflammatory diseases of the urinary system, as a diuretic for stone formation with a predominantly alkaline medium, as a diuretic means for lowering blood pressure.
Juniper fruits are used in infusions and decoctions>, both fresh and dried, combined with other plants for similar medicinal properties.
What infusions and decoctions can be made from Juniper berries?
As a diuretic, Juniper berries can be prepared in the form of infusions:
- Pour one tablespoon of Juniper berries (fresh or dried) with a glass of boiling water and leave to infuse for half an hour. Strain the infusion and drink one tablespoon 3-4 times a day (depending on the number of meals) one hour after eating.
- Mix 6 parts Juniper fruit and two parts Fennel seeds and grind a little in a mortar. Pour a tablespoon of the resulting mixture with a glass of boiling water and leave for six hours, then strain the infusion. Drink 1/4 cup infusion four times a day one hour after a meal or snack. This infusion has, in addition to a diuretic, also a carminative effect.
- 3 parts of juniper fruit, 2 parts of parsley seeds, one part of fennel seeds, grind in a mortar and mix evenly. Pour a tablespoon of the mixture with a glass of boiling water and leave for six hours. Strain the infusion and drink 1/4 cup an hour after eating.
As an anti-inflammatory agent, Juniper berries can be prepared as a decoction:
- Mix three parts of Juniper fruit with two parts of Parsley seeds, one part of Birch leaves, and one part of Bearberry leaves. Grind the mixture in a mortar, mix evenly. Pour one tablespoon of the collection with a glass of water and boil for 15 minutes over medium heat, then set aside to cool and infuse for six hours. Strain the broth and drink one fourth of a glass during meals or immediately after meals at least three times a day.
- In equal parts, take the fruits of Juniper, leaves of Strawberries and flowers of Chamomile, mix and grind lightly in a mortar. Pour one tablespoon of the mixture with a glass of water and brew in a water bath for twenty minutes. Set aside the broth for infusion for 4 hours, strain and drink half a glass during meals at least two to three times a day.
- As a diuretic for kidney stones, bladder, to remove sand with a predominantly alkaline environment, infusions and decoctions of Juniper fruits are used in a company with Lingonberry leaves in a 1 : 1 ratio as a diuretic for distilling sand. From the organs of the urinary system. Infusion of juniper fruits and lingonberry leaves is insisted on the basis of one tablespoon of the mixture (chop lingonberry leaves) a glass of boiling water, brew in a water bath and leave to infuse for 4-6 hours. Strain the infusion and drink a quarter of a glass during or immediately after a meal at least 3 times a day.
- It is useful to make sedentary baths for the organs of the genitourinary sphere from a decoction of Juniper. For such a bath, a collection of equal parts of Juniper fruits, Celandine herbs is prepared, the ingredients are mixed (the Juniper fruits are slightly rubbed). Pour four tablespoons of the prepared mixture with a liter of water and boil for fifteen minutes, then insist until cooled. The resulting infusion is filtered and diluted to three liters and to such a temperature that you can take a bath in a basin for half an hour. Baths are done before bedtime and, preferably, after each urination for one to two weeks. Such baths well relieve inflammation of the urinary tract mucosa and are suitable for both sexes as a preventive and therapeutic agent for cystitis and other inflammatory diseases of the ureter.
Juniper needles are also used for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes. The phytoncides exuded by the plant have an antimicrobial effect. Such herbal medicine is useful for diseases of the respiratory organs, as well as for disinfecting the air in enclosed spaces - since ancient times, living quarters have been fumigated with coniferous branches of Juniper. Juniper needles can be combined with Peppermint leaves for preparation of infusions for inhalation. To prepare inhalation infusions, the Juniper needles are not boiled, but slightly rubbed to enhance the effect of phytoncides release and poured with boiling water immediately before the procedure itself.
The collected Juniper needles (11 ounces needles per 34 ounces of water) are brewed in a water bath for fifteen minutes, insisted for 4 hours, filtered and prepared for the baths for the urogenital tract for cystitis, inflammation of the mucous membrane of the urogenital organs of various natur.
If you add an infusion of Bidens tripartita to the previous recipe for the infusion of Juniper needles, you can get a medicinal infusion for external baths for pustular skin infections (for the skin of the hands, for the skin of the legs, for the skin of the body, for rinsing the scalp).
To create a unique health-improving atmosphere in the bath (steam room), coniferous branches of the Common Juniper are also used - they are brooms. Before use, Juniper twigs are lightly crushed so that the needles release juice and, accordingly, large quantities of phytoncides.
