Why does the head skin itch?

Who at least once in their life has not experienced itching in the area of hair growth on the head? This is a fairly common phenomenon, but the causes of its occurrence can be different: from diseases of the head skin to simple trauma (mechanical or chemical) of the skin in the area of hair growth.

Why does the head skin itch?

One of the most common problems with itchy head skin is dry head skin. This can happen to anyone who uses shampoos to wash their hair without delving too much into their chemical composition. Very often, the agents in the hair care detergent dry out the head skin too much, cause flakes of the skin to flake off, and cause an itchy feeling.

The second common problem of itchy head skin is frequent washing of the head and hair, which also provokes dryness of the skin and causes skin irritation.

Wearing hats with tight elastic bands can cause itching of the head, since the elastic bands tighten the microvessels located on the upper layers of the head skin and disrupt the blood supply to the tissues, numbness and, accordingly, reflex itching, which allows blood circulation to be restored at the capillary level.

This effect is produced by tight hairpins, elastic bands and ribbons that pull the hair together. They also interfere with the capillary blood supply to the head skin and contribute to the development of itching. Serious scalp problems can also cause head skin irritation and itching. The head skin itches with skin diseases: seborrhea, psoriasis, eczema, various kinds of dermatitis.

It is not uncommon for insects to colonize the head skin and hair, and with their bites provoke itchy head skin (lice, scabies mites, mites - Demodex).

If you feel that changing shampoo, reducing the frequency of shampooing and the absence of traumatic factors acting on the skin does not stop skin irritation and itching, it makes sense to consult a trichologist to determine the exact causes of skin irritation and to follow the appropriate treatment.
