Aphakia.
Aphakia implies the absence of a lens in the eyeball. Usually aphakia occurs in the case of an operation to remove the lens due to its opacity in cataracts, but in some cases it can be the result of an eye injury, loss of the lens when the eye is injured, or a congenital anomaly in the structure and size of the lens (sometimes its absence). Sometimes the displacement of the lens resembles the signs of aphakia.
In the absence of a lens, the refraction mechanism of the light flux changes, that is, the refraction of the eye and its accommodation are disturbed. Aphakia is often accompanied by another vision pathology - astigmatism, which complicates the design of glasses.
If aphakia is unilateral (monocular), then it is complicated by the phenomenon of aniseikonia, when each of the eyes sees a different size of the retinal image.
Treatment of aphakia involves correcting vision with lenses (first, lenses are used for distance, then, after getting used to, lenses are used for near), while controlling astigmatism. To achieve the required visual acuity, glasses with convex lenses (positive 8.0-17.0) are used. Usually a person with aphakia needs a pair of glasses (some for distance, others for near).
With unilateral aphakia, it is possible to implant an artificial lens into the eye - an intraocular aphakia correction operation is performed. Intraocular lenses are selected individually using a computer program and tabular calculations, and the refraction of the artificial lens is selected at the request of the patient.
For monocular aphakia , contact lenses are used to exclude or reduce aniseikonia .
With correct vision correction, special orthoptic exercises, and the absence of irreversible disturbances in the innervation and structure of the eye apparatus, good results are achieved in the field of restoration of binocular vision.
In case of monocular aphakia in combination with other eye diseases, disability is prescribed, the disability group depends on the degree of visual acuity impairment in aphakia.
