Medicinal plants in dentistry and otolaryngology.
Dentistry and otolaryngology are convenient areas of application of the beneficial medicinal properties of medicinal plants, since diseases of the oral cavity and throat are often associated with inflammatory processes, edema, erosion, ulcerative necrotic plaque, bleeding of mucous membranes and require the use of drugs that provide anti-inflammatory, disinfectant, reparative ( wound healing) and tanning effect. It is this set of properties that characterizes many medicinal plants, allowing them to be used in the therapeutic treatment of diseases of the mucous membrane of the oral cavity and throat.
Medicinal plants - antiseptics and reparants are used as rinses of the mouth and throat, lotions, irrigation, applications of the mucous membrane surface and the edge of the gums adjacent to the teeth. They are used during teething, with various forms of gingivitis, periodontitis, stomatitis of various etiologies, as well as throat diseases: pharyngitis, tonsillitis, acute respiratory diseases, accompanied by swelling of the mucous membrane of the throat and nasopharynx.
Plants for inflammation of the mucous membrane, edema and injuries of the mucous membrane, mucous membrane with necrotic plaque, erosions and ulcers on the mucous membrane:
- Calendula - has a pronounced bacteriostatic and reparative effect, is used for antiseptics and healing of abrasions, ulcers, mucosal erosions, for removing necrotic masses.
- Chamomile - has an anti-inflammatory effect, relieves swelling, disinfects the mouth and throat.
- St. John's wort is a good antiseptic, it also accelerates the regeneration processes of the mucous membrane and strengthens its barrier functions, providing a tanning effect. The plant is used for inflammation of the mucous membrane associated with injuries, with erosions, when washing off necrotic plaque.
- Sage - has a good anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effect, has an astringent effect, relieves irritation of the mucous membrane, edema.
- Eucalyptus is a good disinfectant and astringent.
- Oak bark - used in cases requiring the use of binders and tanning agents to compact the structure of the mucous membrane and increase its barrier functions.
- Rhizome of Snake root - has a tanning effect.
- Thyme - has a tanning and antiseptic effect.
- Stinging nettle - acts as a hemostatic and anti-inflammatory agent.
- Burnet - has a hemostatic, astringent and tanning effect.
- Peppermint is a good antiseptic and anesthetic, softens and deodorizes mucous membranes, which is especially important in cases of diseases accompanied by the processes of decay, necrosis.
Infusions from the aforementioned plants used as external agents (only for rinsing, lotions without swallowing) can be prepared in slightly higher concentrations than infusions from medicinal plants for oral administration.
In addition to infusions of medicinal plants, some of them are used as keratoplastic preparations for applications on the affected surfaces of the mucous membrane: St. John's wort oil, sea buckthorn oil, eucalyptus oil, sage oil.
There are a number of preparations based on extracts from the described medicinal plants. Their advantages over self-prepared medicinal products lie in higher concentrations of medicinal substances extracted from the plant and the absence of unnecessary impurities that sometimes have side effects (for example, allergic reactions). These drugs include:
- Tincture of calendula;
- Tincture of Japanese Sophora;
- Eucalyptus tincture;
- Chlorophyllipt (base - eucalyptus extract);
- Rotokan (base - extracts from chamomile, calendula, yarrow);
- Maraslavin (base - extracts from wormwood, carnation flowers, black pepper, savory);
- Tannin (base - tannin acid: extract of ink nuts, oak bark, sumach);
- Novomanin (base - extract of St. John's wort);
- Romazulan (base chamomile extract);
