Particularly relevant is the problem of aerogenic contamination during the height of respiratory diseases, influenza epidemics and many other viral and bacterial infections. There are several types of air disinfection apparatus, which differ in their physical characteristics and the effect produced in the course of disinfection , they are called "germicidal irradiators". There are two types of germicidal irradiators: open and closed.

Quartz lamps (open-type irradiators) generate ultraviolet radiation of a certain length, which has a detrimental effect on some types of viruses and bacteria (bacilli and cocci), and simultaneously ozonizes the air. Spore forms of bacteria and fungi are the most hardy - they are not affected by quartzing. Working with a quartz lamp requires adherence to some rules: safety rules, for example, working in special glasses, and keeping a log of quartzization of the room (over time, the radiation intensity decreases and it is necessary to change the operating time of the quartz lamp). The quartzing procedure can be carried out only in the absence of humans and animals in the room. But for plants, quartzing is not only safe, but also has a beneficial effect on their growth. Quartz lamps are wall, ceiling, mobile floor lamps. Quartz lamps do not work constantly, but according to a specific schedule for the time specified in the instructions. The sizes and wattage of quartz lamps differ depending on how much of the room is to be treated. After the application of quartz lamps, ventilation of the room is shown to weather the accumulated ozone.

Air recirculators (recirculating bactericidal lamps - closed-type irradiators) - devices, in terms of their characteristics and the effect created during operation, are somewhat different from quartz lamps. The recirculator circulates air through its housing, where quartz lamps are located (the so-called ozone-free quartz lamps, when used, the minimum amount of ozone is released). Recirculators are safe for humans and animals, they can work continuously, and enable humans and animals to stay indoors all the time. Recirculators are wall-mounted, ceiling-mounted, mobile, floor-standing or table-top. When using recirculators, there is no need to ventilate the room.

It should be noted that the use of bactericidal irradiators at home will not eliminate dust, fungal spores (irradiators do not filter the air). Therefore, in addition to bactericidal irradiators, it makes sense to purchase air cleaners that contain special filters and, by driving air through them, rid it of the suspension of various dust particles. In addition, the air purifier can trap dust mites and fungal spores on the filters, but bacteria and viruses will not retain the filters.
