Why does the arch of the foot hurt?
There are a number of painful symptoms in the area of the arch of the foot, united by the name "metatarsalgia" (from the word "metatarsal" - metatarsal part of the foot). Metatarsalgias are very common pain syndromes in which incoming pains develop in the arch and / or between the toes: shooting, twitching or burning pains. Pain of this nature can occur during the period of load on the foot and stop when the foot is relaxed, can occur when pressing at certain points of the foot and go away when the pressure is weakened. Metatarsalgia (or pain in the arch of the foot) occurs when wearing uncomfortable shoes: too narrow or with high heels and uncomfortable instep supports, if it is necessary to raise frequently "on tiptoe".
In addition to the fact that a person experiences pain in the instep of the foot (between the toes, radiating to the toes) when walking, he begins to rebuild the load on the foot, transferring it from the forefoot to the heel, which causes additional injuries and disturbances in the mechanics of movement of the metatarsophalangeal joints. Such disorders often lead to inflammation and swelling of the metatarsophalangeal joints of the foot.
There are many reasons for the occurrence of metatarsalgia:
- injuries of the interdigital nerves, in which neuromas develop - the proliferation of tissues of the nerve trunks or the connective tissue that is part of them (Morton's neuroma);
- pathological disorders in the metatarsophalangeal joints associated with rheumatic diseases, deformities of the metatarsophalangeal joints of the foot, congestion of the metatarsophalangeal joints (heaviness, overweight) or disturbances in the mechanics of the foot during movement;
- dislocations or subluxations in the metatarsal joints of the leg;
- flat feet caused by overloading the legs when carrying weights,
- sprain or tear of the ligaments of the foot,
- paresis of the muscles of the foot.
Treatment of pain in the arch of the foot begin only after a diagnostic examination and identification of the exact cause of metatarsalgia. If dislocations, neuroma and paralysis of the muscles of the foot are excluded, then the treatment is symptomatic: anti-inflammatory drugs are used and specially selected orthoses are used to correct the mechanics of movement of the joints of the foot. When a neuroma is detected, corticosteroid drugs are injected into the site of growth of the nerve trunk and the wearing of special orthopedic shoes is prescribed to relieve the damaged area of the nerve. If it is impossible to cure the neuroma with conservative methods, surgical treatment is prescribed - excision of the neuroma. In case of paresis of the muscles of the foot, drugs are prescribed that improve neuromuscular conductivity, foot massage and physical exercises to develop the muscle group of the foot and restore the patency of nerve impulses.
