Nicotine stomatitis.
Nicotine stomatitis is a type of keratosis that develops on the oral mucosa as a result of chronic trauma to the mucous membrane of the palate, tongue, cheeks in cigar and pipe smokers. The more intense the smoking, the more the mucous membrane changes, which at the initial stages takes the form of erythema (red inflamed spot). Gradually, keratotic papules with red dots are formed, corresponding to the location of the mouth of the excretory duct of the salivary glands, inflamed as a result of chronic trauma. The papules are slightly raised above the surface of the mucosa, the color of the mucous membrane becomes cloudy, acquiring a grayish-white tint. If there are many papules, then they are located close to each other, not merging, but forming a pattern that resembles the laying of paving stones.
Changes in the mucous membrane, like nicotine stomatitis, can be caused by other irritating factors, for example, the methodical use of too hot drinks or food.
Malignancy of the process of alteration of the mucous membrane with nicotinic stomatitis occurs extremely rarely, as a rule, in smokers who use "fire inside" smoking. But, nevertheless, when smoking, a concentrated stream of smoke containing carcinogenic chemically active substances is one of the factors provoking the processes of carcinogenesis and increasing the likelihood of developing malignant tumors in the oral cavity.
Treatment of nicotine stomatitis does not present any particular difficulties and is aimed at eliminating factors traumatizing the mucous membrane (smoking, taking hot drinks and food). Subject to smoking cessation, nicotine stomatitis is reversible, and the affected mucosa gradually returns to its original state. It is possible to speed up the processes of regeneration of the mucous membrane by using applications with keratoplastic substances (Sea buckthorn oil, Aekol, etc.)
