The use of bacteriophages in gynecology.
The theory of the origin and vital activity of microorganisms such as viruses suggests that they cause enormous harm to humans, parasitizing living cells of the body. But along with this there is a type of virus that does not harm a person, but benefit. These are bacteria viruses - bacteriophages. Recent scientific developments made in the field of studying phage therapy of various diseases have led to the fact that bacteriophages began to be used in various fields of medicine, including gynecology. How can bacteriophages help in the treatment of gynecological diseases? Since many diseases of the female genital organs are to one degree or another associated with inflammation caused by pathogenic microflora (and in particular a bacterial infection), there are great opportunities for the action of a bacteriophage, since the bacterial virus is aimed at destroying just such a microorganism as a bacterium.
The use of phage therapy in gynecology is justified in cases where a bacteriophage solution can be used to treat any surface of a mucous organ or to introduce it into an organ cavity (for example, into a vaginal or uterine cavity). Bacteriophage solutions are well suited for treatment and irrigation of ulcers, cracks, wounds on mucous membranes, they do not allow pathogenic bacteria to multiply. It is also appropriate to use bacteriophages in the treatment of vaginal dysbiosis.
In case of erosions and injuries, open wounds, it is convenient to use douching with a bacteriophage solution or inject a tampon soaked in a solution, or both at the same time. It should be borne in mind that the bacteriophage is stored in the refrigerator, therefore, it must first be held at room temperature or a bottle with a solution should be warmed in the hands. The bacteriophage needs at least an hour to be in the area of application, so that it has time to multiply and affect the quantitative composition of the bacterial colony.
Also, a bacteriophage solution can be used to restore the vaginal microflora in diseases such as colpitis (vaginitis), vaginosis or vulvovaginitis. In these cases, the use of a bacteriophage together with antibiotics is permissible. But the planting of beneficial microflora (lactobacilli) is best done after phage therapy, and not simultaneously.
The question of the effectiveness of the use of a bacteriophage in the treatment of inflammatory diseases of the female genital organs or vaginal dysbiosis depends on the bacterial strains detected during the smear analysis, since the bacteriophage is very specific in relation to various types of bacteria, that is, it acts only on the bacterium whose virus itself is. This means that Staphylococcal bacteriophage will be effective only for strains of staphylococcal bacteria, Streptococcal bacteriophage is effective for streptococcal infection. With mixed pathogenic microflora, a polyvalent liquid pyobacteriophage or a complex liquid pyobacteriophage is used.
