Senestopathy - what is it?
Unpleasant, uncomfortable, pointless sensations in the body (in the internal organs or on the surface of the body) that have no pathological grounds for their existence are called senestopathy. Sensations with senestopathy have different colors (burning, itching, stirring, tingling, gurgling, crunching, etc.), may be permanent or transient, may migrate. Unpleasant sensations distract a person, irritate his nervous system and interfere with a calm life.
Despite the fact that senestopathy has localization, that is, a person can more or less accurately indicate the place of occurrence of unpleasant sensations, it is not possible to diagnose a disease developing in this area, and scientists believe that such pointless sensations may be the product of a person's mental instability suffering from depression, neurosis, hypochondria.
The distinctive signs of senestopathy from signs of somatic illness are considered the inability of a person complaining of an uncomfortable condition to find words to describe the sensations he experiences, since he has never encountered these sensations before, and he has nothing to compare them with. But this does not negate the diagnosis of diseases that are not related to disorders of the patient's mental state. Senestopathy is differentiated from paresthesia, phantom sensations, sympalgia, thalamic pain, autonomic disorders. Thus, it does not hurt to send a patient with vague complaints for a medical examination, and after that, to diagnose "senestopathy".
Treatment for senestopathy has varying effectiveness, up to and including ineffectiveness. The lack of treatment results for senestopathy is associated with the presence of organic changes (or pathological anatomical changes) in the structure of the brain. In favorable cases for treatment, tranquilizers, antidepressants, antipsychotics are used in minimal doses.
