Leukoma of the eye (thorn) - how to cure?
Leukoma of the eye (common name "thorn") - a violation of the transparency of the cornea of the eye as a result of scarring of the tissue of the stroma of the cornea. The processes of scarring of the stroma of the cornea of the eye are associated with injuries, infections and other kinds of influences that cause inflammatory processes of the cornea and disturbances in the processes of tissue regeneration during healing. Rarely, leukoma is congenital and associated with intrauterine infection.
Leukoma can occupy a large area, spreading to the entire cornea, or partially disrupting its transparency, which affects the clarity of vision up to the complete loss of the ability of the cornea to transmit light, which means that it also entails a complete loss of vision of the affected eye.
Since the regeneration of the connective tissue (namely, the corneal stroma is formed by it), which takes place with the formation of scars, is irreversible, leukoma of the eye is treated by surgical plastic surgery of the cornea or its part - keratoplasty. In keratoplasty, either donor material or an artificially created graft is used. The operation is performed, as a rule, under local anesthesia and requires a rehabilitation period for a year under the supervision of an ophthalmologist.
Folk remedies in the treatment of leukoma are a false hope for positive results. Home treatment of leukoma can worsen the cloudiness process and spread it to adjacent corneal areas that are still allowing light to pass through.
Prevention of the development of leukoma is associated with the prevention of eye injury (wearing goggles), with the timely professional treatment of eye inflammations and infections.
