Healthy or diseased eyes - how to determine?

A person takes the work of the visual apparatus for granted, not particularly paying attention to rare symptoms that indicate a painful condition of the eyes. Usually, eye health is remembered when vision begins to noticeably deteriorate, but long before the moment when the visual apparatus begins to malfunction, one can understand that the eyes are sick.

During the day, it is the eyes that work to a greater extent than other organs, being responsible for the perfect orientation in space. And the visual organ is designed in such a way that it can “take care” for its own health.

Lacrimal fluid (tears), which is often used to relieve emotional stress, is not intended for this at all, but in order to keep the eyes in a constantly moist environment, preventing the surface of the eyeball from drying out. The tear fluid bathes the tissues surrounding the eyeball so as to protect them from friction when closing and opening the eyelids. And also tears are designed to protect against external infection, which is primarily "meet" the eyes, and which settles on the surface of the eyeball. Tears are a physiological antibiotic, they contain the natural substance Lysozyme (an active antibacterial agent) and saline solution (an antiseptic for all other cases of infection with microorganisms, in most of which salt inhibits vital functions).

The more often a person blinks, the more regularly the eyeball is treated with tear fluid, and the higher the protection from external mechanical, chemical and biological hazards, which means the higher the protection of the eyes from diseases. So winking is not always defined ambiguously - it may turn out to be just a protective reflex reaction of the body to external eye stimuli.

A person himself creates the prerequisites for eye disease, trying to reduce the number of blinks, for example, when reading from a digital media or viewing digital images (or videos). This is especially noticeable when you have to read or look at something on a digital screen, forcing your eyes to follow a moving image during moments of jolting when traveling by transport. Reading from moving digital media is extremely detrimental to eye health. In addition to reducing blinking, it forces the eye muscle to move several times faster than necessary, which quickly creates a moment of fatigue in the eye muscle, which simply refuses to focus correctly at the most inopportune moment. This is felt as a temporary decrease in the clarity of vision and requires rest for the visual apparatus. The abuse of reading in a moving vehicle reduces the physiological health of the eye apparatus by half. A sign of deterioration in eye health in such cases is excessive dryness and redness of the eyes (the eyes blink little and require a lot of blood for capillaries and movement of the eye muscle, which leads to the appearance of an early vascular network on the eyeball).

A familiar allergy manifests itself in respiratory tract irritation (cough), skin irritation (skin itching), indigestion (diarrhea or nausea). But the eyes are also susceptible to allergies, and an ocular allergic reaction is most often simply ignored, as it looks like normal eye fatigue or temporary irritation (as if something got into the eyes). Eye allergies will not disappear when washing the eyes, will not stop after using eye drops with antiseptics, because its causes may not be eliminated - for example, the surrounding atmosphere contains chemical vapors that cause an allergic eye reaction, eye cosmetics are most often allergenic, or food contains an allergen that creates inflammation in the mucous membrane of the eye in the same way that it creates inflammation of the intestinal or oral mucosa. Eye allergy signals symptoms of burning, itching and unmotivated redness of the mucous membrane around the eyes (eyelid mucosa). Often, it is allergies that cause eyelash loss and eyelid edema.

What do healthy eyes look like? The whites of the eyes should be white with a barely visible vascular network of a bluish, not red color. Eyes should shine from regular moistening of the eyeball. Eyelashes do not often fall out during physiological changes, and this does not affect the thickness of the eyelashes. Blinking should be an imperceptible and non-irritating moment for a person, otherwise we can talk about a disease of the nervous system in that part of it that is responsible for the motor functions of the entire eye organ. In a healthy sense, a person blinks more often when peering at a still picture or an inscription in a printed publication (in a book or in a magazine), or on an artist's canvas, than when viewing a digital medium.

It is very useful for eye health to consider volumetric images in space, and not in 3D computer processing. Spatial objects train spatial vision, which is given to a person by nature, in order to constantly keep the eye muscle in good shape - it has to change focus from near to far when looking at a three-dimensional object. Therefore, it is worth using this feature of vision when examining the surroundings with buildings, trees, mountains, and similar natural or man-made objects. It is also very good for the health of the eyes to visit sculpture exhibitions or parks with sculptures or intricate structures, where the vision will rest and at the same time be tempered.

What does a sick eyes look like? A sick eyes do not always see poorly, but I have signs that speak not only about a specific eye disease, but also about the general health of the body:

  • Increased tearing may indicate an infection that the lacrimal fluid can no longer cope with, chemical or mechanical irritants that are in the atmosphere and invisible to the eye, but felt by the eye, pathological changes in the functioning of the visual apparatus (glaucoma).
  • Barley on the eyelid can appear and develop for a long time not only as a result of an infection that has entered the tissue of the eyelid, but also due to improper functioning of the sebaceous glands in case of unhealthy liver, digestive disorders, metabolic disorders (in particular, fat metabolism).
  • The sclera of the eyeball changes color from white (or bluish-white) to any other due to disorders of the liver, blood supply to the eye, overstrain of the eye apparatus and not enough sleep (rest for the eyes).
  • Pain in the region of the eye apparatus may indicate an overstrain of the eye muscle, which, for example, tries to focus the image at a near distance for too long, while our vision is physiologically adapted to view objects far away. Such pain is often camouflaged as a headache, which forces a person to take headache remedies rather than ease the tension of the visual apparatus.

In order to prevent many diseases of the visual apparatus, which is invaluable for a person’s quality of life, and also to notice the onset of the development of general diseases in time, it is necessary to look into your own eyes more often, since they are part of the group of the main organs of rapid response to harmful external and internal influences, and are the main controller of the ambient life.
