What does radon baths treat?
One of the spa treatments, radon baths, raises many questions about safety and therapeutic effect.
Radon-222 gas dissolved in water is not an inert substance. It is an isotope of radium-226, which occurs during its decay and is accompanied by alpha radiation. Radon-222 itself is also capable of emitting alpha particles. Like any radioactive substance with alpha radiation, radon is not safe, as it causes damage to the cells of internal organs, penetrating the respiratory tract and through the mucous membranes. The stratum corneum of the epidermis is able to trap alpha radiation, which creates imaginary safe conditions for its therapeutic use. But taking radon baths, a person, one way or another, inhales the vapors of this gas and runs the risk of getting an impetus to the development of lung cancer.
Alpha radiation stimulates immune processes and activates cytokines that are responsible for neutralizing sensitizing reactions in the body, thus relieving allergic inflammation, for example, on the skin or mucous membranes, and accelerating regenerative processes in tissues. Radon baths treat inflammation resulting from allergic reactions. This is why radon baths are so popular among medical procedures in allergology and dermatology. But it is worth weighing the appropriateness of the therapeutic effect and the statistically proven probability of lung cancer.
Radon baths are especially harmful for people working with X-ray equipment, working under the influence of UHF or microwave currents, suffering from leukopenia, heart rhythm disturbances, and radiation sickness.
