What is spasticity?
Very similar to cramps, the condition of tonic muscle tension that occurs when muscle tissue is stretched is called "spasticity".
The phenomenon of spasticity can accompany many diseases that are associated with disorders of peripheral tissue innervation, spinal cord or brain injuries, pathological disorders in the structure of nerve fibers.
Spasmodic muscle contraction is very painful. Due to improper regulation of muscle activity by the brain, the contraction of muscle fibers occurs uncontrollably and suddenly.
Spasmodic contractions are dangerous and cause the muscles to become dormant, which can last for a long time. They actually immobilize a muscle group.
It is sometimes possible to get rid of spastic muscle contraction only with the help of an operation.
Treatment of spasticity is based on the use of therapeutic exercises for forced stretching of the muscles and anticonvulsant drugs. In recent years, botulinum toxin has been successfully used in the treatment of spastic muscle contraction. Botulinum toxin allows the contracted bundles of muscle tissue to "de-energize", that is, disconnect from the impulses of the peripheral nervous system for anesthesia and stop the flow of contractions.
Botulinum toxin injections are done, if necessary, in several stages at regular intervals.
