What is a wandering mind?
As scientists - neurophysiologists say, we differ from animals in the ability to turn our consciousness on ourselves, and not only in the external environment. The ability to look inside ourselves gives rise to the ability to analyze information that we ourselves produce, and do not receive from the external environment through the senses.
The ability to create mental images, a certain degree of fantasy enable the brain to "think over" things that have ever happened (taken from memory), and not this minute. This is how the brain works in a passive mode.
At this time, a person's attention is limited, he is immersed in his own thoughts, he can be in this state for hours, not paying attention to the surrounding reality. In such cases, they say that the person is thinking, has gone inside himself.
It is possible to spend part of the night in a state of wandering mind, and possibly all night. This is where insomnia comes from people - they are busy thinking about what happened during the day, reminiscing about the past and fantasizing about the future.
From the point of view of the need for the brain to work in such a wandering mode, it is an opportunity (time) for processing and ordering the information received.
It is believed that introverts spend more time in a wandering state than extroverts.
But too frequent "shutdowns" of a person during the day from reality provoke distraction of attention, impaired concentration on a certain type of work, and as a result can give rise to "laziness" of the mind when the slightest strain of mental activity or concentration of attention causes fatigue.
