Whooping cough is a sign of the disease.
Pertussis is a highly contagious airborne bacterial disease. Despite the fact that the bacterium Bordetella pertussis survives in the external environment (outside the human body), it can be transmitted by coughing to another person and instantly infects the body.
Two weeks of the latent period of the development of the disease, which are asymptomatic, allows the disease to spread.
Signs of whooping cough:
- The disease begins with a dry incessant cough, low-grade fever,
- Coughing attacks intensify, acquire a paroxysmal character, sputum does not cough up,
- With whooping cough, there is a typical effect called "reprise", when a person pauses coughing for a deeper breath and a whistling sound is heard in the airways.
- Over time, the cough continues with sputum discharge,
- Pertussis is not accompanied by a runny nose, but sometimes when coughing, saliva can enter the nasopharynx and nasal cavity, which provokes the flow of mucus from the nose.
Recovery can be judged by gradually fading coughing fits.
Treatment is carried out with antibacterial drugs, taking into account the bacteria Bordetella pertussis detected in the sputum.
