Sleep paralysis (nocturnal stupor).
Sleep paralysis - refers to disorders of the brain during sleep, reflected in the disruption of muscle function during periods of night awakening. The brain does not have time to "wake up" the muscle tissue, and the person waking up is immobilized. In this condition, panic and hallucinations can develop.
Sleep paralysis occurs at the time of the passage of the REM sleep phase, when the body is relaxed as much as possible, and upon awakening, the mechanisms that send impulses to the muscles do not have time to turn on.
Sleep paralysis can be caused by many factors:
- chronic lack of sleep, insomnia,
- other sleep disorders,
- mental disorders,
- neurotic disorders,
- prolonged stressful conditions,
- drug or alcohol intoxication,
- hormonal disruptions,
- the abuse of sleeping pills, sedatives and antidepressants.
Signs of sleep paralysis:
- in moments of temporary awakening, it is impossible to move the limbs,
- at the moment of awakening, auditory or visual hallucinations may develop,
- the state resembles the border of the transition between sleep and wakefulness,
- can develop several times during the night,
- never occurs under external influences (during braking, loud sounds),
- may be accompanied by an attack of suffocation (it seems that something is compressing the chest from the outside),
- the stupor lasts about two minutes, then everything returns to normal.
Sleep paralysis treatment involves the diagnosis and search for the causes that provoke this kind of disorder. A somnologist is engaged in diagnostics, treatment is carried out after a comprehensive examination, a neurologist, a psychotherapist, an endocrinologist.
Treatment involves correcting sleep with melatonin medications to help induce the body to sleep. In parallel, health disorders are corrected, presumably contributing to the development of sleep paralysis:
- the hormonal background is restored,
- the regime of the day, nutrition is observed,
- chronic diseases that contribute to sleep disturbance and imbalance in the work of the nervous system are treated.
