Emergencies >>>> First aid for hypoglycemic coma

First aid for hypoglycemic coma.

A hypoglycemic coma develops with a rapid decrease in blood glucose levels. At the same time, the utilization of glucose by the brain sharply decreases, therefore, the cerebral cortex and the centers of life support in the medulla oblongata are involved in the pathological state. There comes carbohydrate and oxygen starvation of brain cells. A hypoglycemic coma can develop very quickly - within 15-20 minutes. In this case, the main thing is to correctly assess a person's condition and not to confuse the symptoms of hypoglycemic coma, for example, with symptoms of poisoning. The main difference is that with a hypoglycemic coma, there is a sharp change in the state of human health.

Signs of hypoglycemic coma:

  • Sudden weakness
  • Trembling in the body,
  • Profuse sweat (profuse sweating),
  • Headache,
  • Nausea,
  • Increased heartbeat,
  • Sometimes the patient's condition resembles a state of alcoholic intoxication,
  • The victim may start to "talk", speak indistinctly,
  • Sometimes there is a feeling of numbness in the lips, tongue,
  • There are mood swings from a depressed state to aggression (if assistance is not provided on time, a state of psychosis can develop),
  • Sometimes the attack is accompanied by visual or auditory hallucinations.

The first signs of hypoglycemic coma are replaced by a more serious condition, accompanied by convulsions, deafness, unconsciousness and complete loss of consciousness.

First aid for hypoglycemic coma consists in the ingestion of rapidly digestible carbohydrates: a piece of sugar, sweet tea, candy, chocolate, lollipop, jam. The victim is positioned in such a way that in case of loss of consciousness, the person does not have to fall from the chair to the floor, that is, the position of the person's body must be sufficiently "stable" in relation to the place of his placement. Next, an ambulance team is called, which will infuse a 40% glucose solution intravenously. If a person was unconscious, then these procedures should bring him to his senses. But if the restoration of consciousness does not occur, perhaps a hypoglycemic coma proceeds with a complication - cerebral edema, and such a patient should be monitored in a hospital under the supervision of a neuropathologist.
