What are Lumineers for?
If the color of the frontal part of the teeth is changed so that it is impossible to restore it by cleaning plaque or by whitening teeth, and the shape of the frontal teeth is distorted (the enamel has defects visible to the naked eye, the outlines of the coronal part of the tooth do not fit into the concept of an ideal shape), then it will help to eliminate such unpleasant things are the use of lumineers or veneers.
Lumineers are thin plates (ceramic or polymer) that imitate the frontal tooth surface (visible to the eye) and restore an almost ideal appearance of the tooth from the frontal side and the incisal edge. The principle of using lumineers is similar to the principle of using false nails, when the nail itself is not touched, and a template of the appearance that suits the client is attached on top of it. In the case of lumineers, the same thing happens, but there are two possibilities: using standard blanks (with a large selection of shapes, sizes and colors), or making lumineers individually, while negotiating the shape, size and color with the patient.
Lumineers have a thickness of approximately 0.2-0.3 mm, which allows them to be installed on the teeth without preliminary turning the frontal surface of the tooth, but there are times when it is necessary to grind the surface on which the lumineers will be applied in order to level it and create roughness for additional retention (conditions for keeping the lumineer on the surface). Lumineers are attached using glue (adhesive) applied to the inner surface of the lumineer. It should be noted that the lumineers can be removed and the original appearance of the teeth can be restored. Lumineers are removed in the dentist's office (preferably the dentist who installed them for you).
The technology for using lumineers was invented and patented in the USA, therefore, individual production of lumineers must correspond to this technology and the place of manufacture. It is necessary to pay attention to this fact.
Lumineers are designed to improve the aesthetic appearance of teeth with the minimum necessary involvement of the teeth themselves in processing, but this is not a cheap tool. The average price of a custom-made unit of lumineers is $ 700, but standard lumineers are much cheaper.
There are indications and contraindications for the installation of lumineers.
Indications:
- Changed color of teeth without the possibility of correcting it,
- Not too wide gaps (spaces) between the teeth,
- Small diastema between the central incisors,
- Enamel deformation (including chips, cracks, hypoplasia),
- Expanded teeth when there is no desire or clinical opportunity to correct the position of the tooth with the help of orthodontics.
Contraindications:
- Possible fracture of the tooth (with low strength of the tooth tissue),
- Gingivitis,
- Periodontitis,
- Poor dental care,
- Pathological abrasion of teeth,
- Low coronal parts of the tooth,
- Classic progeny (reverse bite) or cross bite,
- Bruxism ,
- Contraindications associated with diseases of a general nature.
When using lumineers, you will have to give up some habits: clicking seeds with your teeth, smoking through a mouthpiece or with a pipe, gnawing bones, biting off a large piece (for example, sausage, dried fish, smoked meat, barbecue, apple, etc.). It is advisable to cut food into pieces, put it in your mouth and chew with chewing teeth, otherwise your Lumineers at the most inopportune moment may remain on the food into which you have sunk your teeth.
