The gap between the upper teeth - how to fix it?
The gap between the upper teeth (central incisors) is called a diastema. Diastema is considered to be an anomaly of the dentition, which is usually inherited.
The causes of diastema are different:
- Anomalies of the frenum of the upper lip (low attachment of the frenum, massive size of the frenum),
- Late teething,
- Presence of impacted teeth in the thickness of the alveolar process,
- Malocclusion,
- Cleft upper jaw,
- Tumors of the upper jaw,
- Divergence of central teeth as a result of bad habits (thumb sucking, long period of nipple sucking, teeth holding a pencil, pens, and others).
Distinguish between true and false diastema (when the gap between the central incisors is formed during the change of teeth from temporary to permanent).
The gap between the upper incisors can reach a distance of up to 10 mm, but diastemas with a width of 2 - 6 mm are more common. Diastema for many people is a cosmetic defect that causes communication difficulties and psychological discomfort.
The gap between the upper teeth can be corrected with dental therapy, orthodontic, orthopedic or surgical treatment.
In therapeutic dentistry, it is possible to close the gap with composite materials.
In orthopedic dentistry, lumineers or veneers, artificial crowns (ceramic, metal-ceramic, metal-plastic, plastic) are used.
Orthodontic treatment involves the manufacture of a removable plate on the upper jaw, gradually shifting the central teeth, or the use of a temporary fixed bracket - system.
The surgical method of treatment involves changing the condition of the frenum of the upper lip (dissection). It makes sense to carry out it at an age when the formation of the dentition takes place and the teeth change to permanent ones.
The choice of the method for closing the gap between the central incisors depends on the condition of the teeth (incisors) and the patient's consent to carry out the appropriate dental procedures.
