Why are sulfur plugs in the ears formed?
Earwax is the result of the work of the glands of the external auditory canal and its purpose is to protect against inflammatory processes and microtraumas. Thus, earwax does not allow dust and microbes to penetrate into the depth of the ear, retains dead epithelium and removes dirt to an accessible level for cleaning. During ear hygiene, wax is easily removed from the ear canal.
The rate of earwax production is limited, and the increase in earwax production occurs as a result of inflammation or injury. An ear sulfur plug is formed, the removal of which is fraught with a number of difficulties due to the tortuosity of the ear canal.
The following can injure the skin of the external auditory canal:
- water getting into the ears in large quantities when bathing,
- overdried room air, which promotes peeling of the skin in the ear canal,
- violation of ear hygiene - cleaning the ears from wax with devices unsuitable for these purposes.
The gradual accumulation of not naturally excreted earwax leads to its compaction, which contributes to the formation of a sulfur plug in the ears.
Earwax plug may not make itself felt until a certain period, but when a significant amount of moisture enters the ears, the wax swells, the ear sulfur plug increases in size, presses on the walls of the ear canal, or on the eardrum, causing pain. Significant sizes of sulfur plug can impair hearing, cause ear congestion, headaches, dizziness, because a sufficiently dense ear plug can block the hole, due to which the pressure in the inner ear and outside is equalized.
In case of pain in the ear, incomprehensible reasons for ear congestion, it is necessary to contact the doctor for help - removing the sulfur plug. Home removal methods can end in failure: a trauma to the eardrum or purulent infections.
