Medicine questions >>>> Lack of tears is alacrimia
Lack of tears is alacrimia.
Crying often is useless, and not being able to shed tears is already a disease that is called "alacrimia". Alacrimia is a congenital pathology that can have several reasons: absence of a lacrimal gland, impaired production of lacrimal secretions (insignificant tear production or complete absence of tears).
Lack of lacrimation does not pass without leaving a trace on the eyes. It causes drying out of the conjunctiva, cornea, thinning of the sclera. In the absence of tears (alacrimia), a person experiences a feeling of irritation in the eyes, pain, burning. The clarity of vision falls. In addition to unpleasant physical sensations against the background of alacrimia, other eye diseases develop: keratinization of the conjunctiva, xerophthalmia, corneal opacity, simblepharon.
Treatment of lack of tears is a choice between lifelong use of an artificial tear preparation and surgery to transplant the parotid salivary gland (stenonic duct) into the conjunctival cavity.
