Photophobia - signs and treatment.
Photophobia is a condition characterized by intolerance to varying degrees of light radiation. Photophobia can be caused by a structural feature of the light-sensitive elements of the eye (lack of melanin in the iris, anomalies of the retina, cornea, pupil, etc.), it can be a harbinger of a disease (for example, migraine, visual impairment), but it can also develop as a symptom of many diseases (viral, bacterial, chemical poisoning, inflammation of the structures of the eye, retinal detachment, glaucoma, circulatory disorders of the eye or brain, damage to the nervous system).
In addition, photophobia can result from a thermal, chemical or light burn (photophthalmia) of the eye (cornea, retina) , a temporary phenomenon when moving from a dark room to a lighted space, eye fatigue as a result of prolonged exposure to a lighted computer or TV screen, the result of prolonged looking at bright light source, burner flame, especially if the bright light source is the only one in the room.
Signs of photophobia:
When rays of light enter the eyes or exit into a brightly lit space, there is pain in the eyes, lacrimation, a feeling of aches in the eye muscle. All these sensations disappear, you just have to close your eyes or cover them with your hand.
Photophobia treatment is in strict dependence on the accompanying diseases. In the absence of diseases, photophobia is considered as a feature of the functioning of the body (in particular, the visual apparatus) and requires wearing glasses with tinted glasses without diopters, but with a filter that does not transmit ultraviolet radiation. In addition, it is worth remembering that bright concentrated light is painfully tolerated even by healthy eyes, so the optimal condition for the eyes is diffused light from several sources.
