Flinching when falling asleep - causes and treatment.
Many people are familiar with the state when, at the moment of falling asleep, they suddenly feel a sharp tremor of the body or limbs (or one limb), sometimes accompanied by a sensation of falling into an abyss, which is said to be “fell asleep”. There is a second awakening, after which the person falls into a deep sleep. Not a very pleasant phenomenon, sometimes frightening the person himself and unnerving the bed partner, makes you think: "Isn't there any disease behind such a twitching?"
The disease is not behind this phenomenon, but such a complex process of falling asleep suggests that the person did not have time to relax sufficiently before going to sleep, and the brain (which controls all stages of falling asleep, sleeping and waking up) did it for him - intentionally jerkily relaxed the muscular system for the transition to the next phase of sleep. In medicine, this kind of flinching when falling asleep is called hypnagogic (sleep-induced) convulsive syndrome, which is provoked by simultaneously contracting muscle fibers of one muscle bundle. As a rule, such cramps occur at the time of relaxation of the muscles of the cervical spine.
In order for this kind of cramps to occur as rarely as possible, it is necessary to learn how to relax on your own before going to bed, for which not to leave physically strenuous activities in the evening, take warm baths that relax the muscles of the whole body, and do a light massage of the cervical spine and head.
Often, a person, without realizing this, even in a lying position does not allow the muscles to relax (for example, when watching an exciting movie, a computer game or reading a book, the muscles continue to be in good shape). Exercises help control this relaxation process: lie down without a pillow on a flat soft surface, put your hands along the body, close your eyes and try to relax the muscles of the fingers of the hand alternately, followed by the entire hand, then the forearm, shoulder, then go to the other hand in the same order, after then go to relaxation according to the same scheme of the lower extremities. Gradually, a feeling of heaviness in the limbs appears - this indicates that the muscles have relaxed.
