Alimentary dystrophy - what is it?
Alimentary dystrophy is a painful condition characterized by disturbances in the process of nutrition, the result of which is insufficient protein metabolism. In fact, protein starvation develops.
The most frequent manifestations of alimentary dystrophy are characteristic of children under one year of age. The danger of the disease lies in the fact that against the background of protein starvation, the processes of cell division slow down, the process of growth of the body, the development of muscle mass is disrupted, the structure of internal organs is disrupted, and the nervous system is depleted. Alimentary dystrophy can manifest itself not only by weight loss, but also by weight gain (paratrophy). Losing weight is accompanied by dry skin, sagging skin due to atrophy of muscle tissue and subcutaneous tissue. Puffiness develops. Endocrine and immune disorders develop.;p>
The causes of alimentary dystrophy lie in impaired absorption of nutrients in the gastrointestinal tract, abnormalities in the structure of the gastrointestinal tract (for example, narrowing of the esophagus), in malnutrition (starvation), in the inadequacy of physical activity in the calorie content of food, in the scarcity of the diet, poor in protein food.
Treatment of alimentary dystrophy is based on enhanced nutrition enriched with protein foods (emphasis is placed on animal proteins). With the development of edema, fluid intake is limited. In case of dysfunction of any parts of the gastrointestinal tract, parenteral nutrition is used. The severe form of the course of alimentary dystrophy requires transfusion of blood products.
Alimentary dystrophy in the absence of adequate treatment can be fatal.
