Short frenum of the tongue - signs and correcting.
The frenum of the tongue is a cord of connective tissue located under the tongue, attached on one side in the region of the middle of the tongue, and on the other side attached to the base of the alveolar process of the lower jaw opposite the central incisors. The frenum of the tongue serves as an additional fastener for the tongue.
There are features of the formation of the frenum of the tongue, in which it has a shortened appearance, which contributes to a number of problems:
- inconvenience in eating during infancy, when the child cannot properly latch on to the breast and begins to malnourish;
- violations of the formation of speech, as a result of the limited movement of the tongue;
- can inhibit the growth and formation of the lower jaw;
- promotes the formation of a diastema (gap) between the incisors of the lower jaw, which disrupts the structure of the dentition of the lower jaw.
Signs of a short frenum of the tongue:
- Poor milk sucking and weight loss;
- Inability, sticking out your tongue, lick your lips;
- When the tongue is pulled out, the tongue folds up, forming a groove.
The method of correcting a short frenum of the tongue is a surgical intervention in order to incise the frenum of the tongue. The operation is easy to perform and the healing process will take no more than a few days. The frenum of the tongue is incised in newborns without anesthesia, since they have not yet formed nerve endings in this area. For older children, the operation is performed under local anesthesia.
