Inflammation of the papillae in the tongue.
Inflammation of the papillae in the tongue (or the popular name "pip on the tongue") is not uncommon. It is accompanied by unpleasant, rather painful symptoms in the area of the lingual papillae, their hypertrophy (increase in size), disrupts taste sensitivity, complicates the process of eating and causes pain during a conversation.
The causes of inflammation of the papillae of the tongue are varied (from a banal injury to infection):
- Chemical burns in case of accidental ingestion of acids or alkalis of high concentration;
- Chemical injuries if it is necessary to resorb tablets in large quantities;
- Heat burns from excessively hot drinks or food;
- Burns resulting from the throwing of gastric juice into the oral cavity in gastroesophageal reflux disease;
- Burns of the tongue with hydrochloric acid during vomiting at the time of ejection of the contents of the stomach;
- Injuries to the papillae of the tongue, obtained by puncture or cut with a sharp bone;
- Injuries to the papillae as a result of the resorption of lozenges;
- Injuries to the tongue with a toothbrush;
- Injuries as a result of abrasion of the tongue when wearing removable dentures, or injuries with sharp surfaces of the teeth, for example, the cutting edge of a tooth and due to the presence of odontolith, traumatizing the papillae of the tongue when it comes into contact with it;
- Infectious diseases of the mouth, throat or gastrointestinal tract that cause inflammation of the papillae of the tongue (viral, bacterial and fungal origin).
To get rid of unpleasant symptoms and the inflammatory process, it is necessary to analyze the above reasons and remember which of them could presumably cause this inflammation of the lingual papillae.
If the matter is in the trauma of the tongue, then the treatment of inflammation of the papillae in the tongue is reduced to the use of methods to accelerate the processes of tissue regeneration and relieve inflammation.
To do this, use carotene-containing preparations for internal use (Aekol, Vetoron, Carotolin, Retinol), herbal preparations (Rotokan, Chlorophyllipt, Calendula tincture), Lugol (spray or solution) in the form of applications and rinsing (take a solution into the mouth and hold for a while) with the addition of carotene and very weak solutions of antiseptics (furacilin, potassium permanganate); make ointment applications on the injured surface using anti-inflammatory ointments (Cholisal, Solcoseryl). In case of severe painful symptoms, it is possible to use local anesthetics: a solution of Trimecaine, Lidocaine, Anastezin emulsion (you can use the Strepsils Plus spray or use the Lidocaine Asept spray). It is recommended to use local immunostimulating drugs, also use to accelerate reparative processes, proteolytic enzymes (directly treat the site of injury or inflammation with trypsin or chymotrypsin). Vitamins A and E are taken, which contribute to accelerated tissue healing.
It is necessary to exclude spicy, salty, sour, overly sweet foods and drinks during treatment, and also to reduce the temperature of food and drinks taken to room or slightly warm. Do not use removable dentures during treatment, do not smoke. It is advisable to eat food in a softened state, and not in pieces (soups, purees, liquid cereals, etc.). Do not take alcoholic beverages during treatment, they will cause additional injury.
If the inflammation of the papillae of the tongue is caused by infectious agents, then we will talk about treatment with drugs corresponding to the detected infection. To do this, a scraping (smear) is made from the tongue and the presence of a specific pathogenic microorganism is established in a laboratory way. Further, treatment is carried out according to the identified strains of microorganisms:
- The fungal infection is treated with antifungal drugs (for example, Candida fungus - fluconazole);
- A viral infection is treated with antiviral agents (for example, the Herpes virus - Acyclovir);
- Protozoal infection and some types of anaerobic bacterial infection are treated with Metrogyl-denta gel;
- With a bacterial infection, antibiotics are selected according to the sensitivity of the bacteria detected .
Treatment of the inflammatory process in the area of the papillae can be delayed if the usual trauma of the tongue is accompanied by an infectious component.
Untimely treatment of inflammation of the papillae of the tongue can transform into ulcers, cracks in the tongue and other complications, which are much more difficult to cure. The inflammatory process can spread to the entire tongue, which will cause another disease - glossitis, and cause additional trouble.
For professional treatment of inflammation of the papillae of the tongue, they turn to doctors: a general dentist, a mucous dentist or a periodontologist.
