Dental retainers.
You have braces installed, worn for a year and safely moved your teeth. But it's too early to relax - it is necessary to consolidate the result of the braces so that the teeth do not return to their original position over time. It is for these purposes that dental retainers (retention devices) are used - removable or non-removable structures made of plastic and metal wire.
Removable dental retainers resemble plate removable dentures (only without teeth) with specially curved wire dental retainers that fit over the dentition and fix the teeth in a certain position. Fixed dental retainers are a wire bent in the shape of the dentition and glued to the teeth from the oral side (from the lingual or palatal).
Like any prosthetic constructions, dental retainers have advantages and disadvantages:
- They get used to non-removable dental retainers faste.
- Removable retainers are easier to care for and for oral hygiene procedures.
- The period of wearing retainers is much longer than braces (twice).
- Fixed dental retainers are not visible visually, while removable dental retainers give themselves out with wire attachments on the teeth (from the outside).
- Removable dental retainers can interfere with taste and be uncomfortable due to the plastic plate in the mouth.
- When treating or removing teeth, non-removable dental retainers have to be peeled off, which can only be done by an orthodontist.
Dental Retainers are a mandatory step in orthodontic treatment following the wearing of braces or trainers.
