Enterovirus - why is it dangerous?
Viruses of the Enterovirus genus are causative agents of infectious diseases with various clinical manifestations. About 80% of enterovirus infections can be almost asymptomatic.
The most typical signs of an enterovirus infection:
- The body temperature rises sharply to 39 - 40 degrees,
- Vomiting appears,
- The general well-being worsens,
- A poorly tolerated headache develops,
- Diarrhea may occur,
- Skin rashes (enterovirus exanthema) may appear.
The disease can vary in severity. The time period for the course of the disease can be up to three weeks. The danger of infection with enterovirus is that viruses of this kind are capable of infecting the central nervous system and causing the disease "serous meningitis".
Enterovirus infection is transmitted by airborne droplets or by contact from a sick person or a carrier of the virus. Water, food, household items, dirty hands can become a source and means of transmission of infection.
Prevention of enterovirus infection is complicated by the fact that the virus is extremely resistant to low temperatures, chemical disinfectants, but loses its ability to multiply at temperatures above 50 degrees and under the influence of a solution of bleach or formaldehyde.
According to epidemiological indications, enterovirus prophylaxis is carried out using an attenuated oral poliomyelitis vaccine, which includes poliovirus competing for the environment with enterovirus and replacing it.
Treatment of enterovirus infection is carried out with antiviral drugs, symptomatic therapy is carried out to alleviate the symptoms of the course of the disease: antiemetic drugs, analgesics for relieving headache attacks, solutions for restoring water-salt balance.
