Thrombophlebitis - what is it?
Thrombophlebitis is a pathological condition in which inflammation of the inner side of the wall of a venous vessel develops, followed by the formation of blood clots and the risk of blockage of venous vessels.
Thrombophlebitis provokes the expansion of the venous vessels in the section, stretching of the vascular wall, the risk of rupture of blood vessels or separation of a blood clot.
Thrombophlebitis affects, as a rule, superficially located veins, mainly in the lower extremities, since the load of a person's body weight on the lower extremities and their blood supply is always higher than the level of other parts of the venous highways. But thrombophlebitis can also affect deep veins, which creates deadly prerequisites.
Outwardly, signs of superficial vein thrombophlebitis are visible to the naked eye:
- inflammation, redness and swelling of the skin along the course of the venous bed,
- expansion of the volume of veins,
- tuberosity and protrusion of veins into the superficial layers of the skin,
- pulling pains are felt along the vein, outwardly inflammation can manifest itself in the form of reddish stripes, the anatomical location of the vein,
- temperature rises are possible,
- pain on palpation of the vein area,
- detection of tight strands in the thickness of the tissues when palpating along the vein.
Thrombophlebitis is treated conservatively or surgically. Local therapy of thrombophlebitis involves the use of anti-inflammatory and absorbable drugs (heparin or traxivazine applications - dressings), taking drugs that affect the rheological properties of blood (anticoagulants) and angioprotective drugs.
There is a possibility of non-surgical treatment of thrombophlebitis - sclerotherapy.
Surgical intervention is carried out with the aim of excising venous vessels, the patency of which is impaired and creates the prerequisites for uncontrolled detachment of a thrombus and blocking the blood supply to vital organs.
