Sclerotherapy - what is it for?
Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure aimed at bloodless changes in the state of the venous vessels affected by varicose veins. Sclerotherapy has found wide application in the treatment of diseases such as varicose veins, vascular sclerosis, hemorrhoids, vascular thrombosis and other disorders in the structure of blood vessels and their conduction capacity. Sclerotherapy competes with the surgical removal of varicose vessels, angiectasis, vascular tumors (hemangiomas, lymphangiomas).
During sclerotherapy, a drug is injected into the lumen of the vessel using a puncture needle, which resembles foam in consistency. The foamy substance injures the walls of the vessels, provoking their scarring. The vessel overgrows and turns into fibrous tissue.
Sclerotherapy procedures are performed on an outpatient basis and do not require long-term rehabilitation (dressings). As a rule, before and during the procedure, an ultrasound scan of the vessel is performed to monitor the condition of the vessel and the progress of sclerotherapy.
Contraindications to sclerotherapy:
- Heart defects,
- Infectious diseases,
- Skin diseases during an exacerbation,
- Atherosclerosis and thrombophlebitis of the lower extremities in severe form,
- Allergy to sclerosing substance,
- Pregnancy and lactation.
During the rehabilitation period, it is necessary to wear compression tights, stockings, bandages, walk a lot, do aerobics (a few days after the procedure), and not lead a sedentary (recumbent) lifestyle.
