Transient ischemic attacks - what is it?
Very often, cerebral circulation disorders are accompanied by a number of characteristic symptoms: dizziness, headache, visual disturbances, a feeling of numbness on one side of the body, loss of motor reflexes, a state of general weakness, sometimes short-term loss of consciousness, speech disorders, disorientation. Combinations of symptoms can differ depending on which part of the brain is the violation of blood circulation. Such symptoms occur periodically, in surges and can last from several hours to a day. The presence of transient symptoms that indicate circulatory disorders in the brain are called transient ischemic attacks.
There are a number of factors that provoke transient ischemic attacks:
- Pathologies in the work of the heart muscle,
- Arterial hypertension,
- Hypotension,
- Significant blood loss,
- Violations of the rheological properties of blood,
- Narrowing of the lumens of blood vessels and their patency as a result of atherosclerosis, angiopathy, thrombosis, stenosis, congenital pathologies,
- Spasms of blood vessels of the brain as a result of hypothermia.
Transient ischemic attacks vary in severity:
- Lungs - they last no more than ten minutes,
- Moderate - lasts from ten minutes to several hours,
- Severe - last from several hours to a day.
Stroke is diagnosed if transient ischemic attacks last more than 24 hours.
Transient ischemic attacks are a dangerous condition that can be a harbinger of a brain stroke. For this reason, during the period of the passage of a prolonged transient ischemic attack or the period following a transient ischemic attack, hospitalization of patients is necessary to conduct research, diagnostics and treatment of the identified disorders of cerebral circulation.
Diagnostic tests carried out to prescribe a treatment that prevents transient ischemic attacks:
- Blood chemistry,
- Coagulography,
- Electroencephalography,
- Doppler ultrasonography of the vessels of the neck and head,
- Vascular angiography,
- Computed tomography of the brain.
Treatment of transient ischemic attacks is carried out according to the identified violations:
- treat vascular pathologies, restoring their patency;
- with arterial hypertension, drugs that lower blood pressure are prescribed;
- with arterial hypotension, drugs are prescribed that tone blood vessels;
- improve the rheological properties of blood.
In fact, they do not treat the transient ischemic attack itself, but the diseases that contribute to its occurrence.
