Varicose blood vessels during pregnancy - causes and treatment.
According to statistics, about half of all pregnant women face problems with varicose veins in their legs, even if their body does not have a predisposition to such a disease.
The causes of varicose veins in pregnant women are several factors:
- hormonal changes in the body, accompanied by relaxation of muscle tissue, including smooth muscles of the vascular wall,
- load of blood pressure on the venous vessels of the lower extremities due to an increase in the uterus and some compression of the venous vessels of the abdominal cavity,
- swelling of tissues due to impaired renal function,
- excess weight with uncontrolled eating,
- prolonged standing and a temporary sedentary lifestyle.
Varicose veins of the lower extremities during pregnancy may be accompanied by thrombophlebitis if there are prerequisites for thrombosis (decreased blood flow as a result of reduced fluid intake to relieve edema or due to internal pathological mechanisms leading to this phenomenon).
Treatment of varicose veins during pregnancy consists in the use of venotonics, which regulate the work of the vascular wall, as well as, if necessary, antiplatelet agents and anticoagulants to prevent thrombus formation.
In order to prevent varicose blood vessels during pregnancy, women are advised to do special exercises aimed at stimulating the outflow of blood from the lower extremities. To do this, regularly in a sitting or lying position, it is recommended to raise your legs up. With a significant expansion of the venous wall in the lower extremities in pregnant women, it is recommended to bandage the legs with elastic bandages or wear compression tights (stockings, knee-highs) - this is especially important before the onset of childbirth and before attempts, which put an even greater strain on the veins of the legs.
