Cyst under the tongue - what to do?
The frightening sight in the form of a tumor-like formation in the sublingual region is nothing more than a cyst of the sublingual salivary gland, in medicine called "ranula". Ranula is formed as a result of damage, inflammation, or mechanical blockage of the mouth of the sublingual salivary gland.
The blocked salivary gland continues to produce salivary secretion, which accumulates in the duct and expands its volume to a significant size. In this case, a person begins to experience inconvenience, feeling a foreign formation under the tongue, which prevents the tongue from being positioned in a familiar and comfortable position.
The cause of the development of a cyst under the tongue (ranula) may be an injury to the salivary gland during a meal or an infectious inflammatory process.
A cyst under the tongue can develop for a long time, gradually increasing in size. A feature of the ranula may be its implicit position: not a protrusion in the area of the bottom of the oral cavity, but an arrangement under the jaw-hyoid muscle and a bulge in the chin area. This ranula is called a diving ranula.
What if you notice swelling under your tongue? The cyst can self-resolve - burst under the force of tissue tension. The mucous membrane in the area of the burst cyst will heal on its own. But if the problem of the blockage of the salivary duct is not resolved, then the cyst will develop again. For this reason, you should not pierce the swelling yourself - this will not prevent the formation of a new cyst. It is necessary to consult a dentist surgeon who will free the salivary duct from blockage and thereby prevent all subsequent cyst formation.
Treatment of a cyst under the tongue, which did not burst on its own, also requires surgical intervention in order to excise it and at the same time eliminate the causes that provoked the development of the cyst under the tongue.
For the speedy healing of tissues in the area of the excised sublingual cyst, it is necessary to rinse the oral cavity at home with plant infusions of antiseptic and wound healing action.
