Hairy leukoplakia.
The processes of keratinization of the oral mucosa are often associated with immunodeficiency states of the body, which is reflected in the development of a disease such as hairy leukoplakia.
Chronic diseases that deplete the immune system over time, drugs - immunosuppressants that depress the immune system, AIDS can cause the development of hairy leukoplakia. Often, signs of hairy leukoplakia are observed in older people with reduced immune responses.
Hairy leukoplakia got its name from the histogram, on which the surface of the mucous membrane looks like villi. Most often, the disease affects the mucous surface of the tongue (lateral sides or one of the lateral sides of the tongue), but foci of hairy leukoplakia can also occur on the mucous membrane of the cheeks or palate.
Outwardly, hairy leukoplakia looks like filamentous or flat whitish plaques. In addition to external changes in the mucous membrane, hairy leukoplakia has no symptoms. Situated on the tongue, foci of hairy leukoplakia give the surface of the tongue an unkempt look, but it will not be possible to clean the plaques with a brush.
Differential diagnosis for hairy leukoplakia is carried out with oral candidiasis, traumatic keratosis, verrucous leukoplakia, hypertrophy of the papillae of the tongue, squamous cell carcinoma, papillomatosis, genital warts.
Treatment of hairy leukoplakia is carried out depending on the severity of the course of the disease and includes antiviral, antifungal drugs, as well as steroids that contribute to the disappearance of external signs of the disease. Hairy leukoplakia refers to recurrent forms of leukoplakia, which allows the disease to reappear after a certain period after treatment.
