Prevention of gingivitis.
What is gingivitis?
Gingivitis is a fairly common periodontal disease (tissue surrounding the tooth). It manifests itself in the form of acute or chronic inflammation of the gums, accompanied by edema and bleeding. There are several forms of gingivitis (catarrhal, hypertrophic, ulcerative - necrotic), each of which has its own characteristics of the clinical course of the disease. The inflammatory process in gingivitis can develop not only in the region of the gum edge and interdental papilla, but also often spreads to the mucous membrane of the alveolar process of the upper and / or lower jaw. The inflammatory process can involve not only the tissues surrounding the group of teeth (for example, the teeth of the frontal area - canines and incisors), but also the entire row of teeth of one jaw or both jaws.
The danger of gingivitis disease lies in the nature of its course and the complications associated with it. So acute local gingivitis, with proper treatment, ends with a complete recovery of tissues, but chronic gingivitis, neglected and untreated, will lead to another periodontal disease - periodontitis, which in turn will become the starting point for tooth loss in the future.
Gingivitis - the causes.
There are many reasons for the occurrence of gingivitis, but most often several factors provoke its development:
- Poor oral hygiene (insufficient cleaning of the gingival margin of the teeth),
- Pre-gingival dental deposits (dental plaque, odontolith),
- Chronic injuries to the edge of the mucous membrane (due to improper bite and deformation of the dentition, improperly selected toothbrush bristles, too hot food and drinks, chemical trauma, burns as a result of self-whitening of teeth, trauma due to the frequent use of abrasive toothbrushes),
- Injuries to the gingival margin with fixed prostheses (crowns, bridges),
- Caries in the cervical area of the teeth,
- Hypovitaminosis and vitamin deficiency,
- Endocrine Disorders.
Gingivitis – prevention.
Preventing gingivitis is much easier than treating it. Therefore, the observance of several easy rules will allow not to bring the periodontal condition to the disease.
The rules for the prevention of gingivitis include:
- thorough care of the oral cavity and teeth (timely cleaning, rinsing),
- regular sanitation of the oral cavity (visits to the dentist at least once every six months),
- treatment and prevention of acute or chronic infections of the mouth and throat,
- the right choice of a toothbrush,
- correction of occlusion during the period of changing temporary teeth to permanent ones in childhood,
- treatment of chronic diseases and timely vitamin therapy,
- prevention of mucosal injury (do not abuse hot foods and drinks, follow the rules of self-whitening and cleaning teeth from plaque).
