Why does the head hurt on the plane?
Many people find it difficult to travel while traveling due to the fact that when the plane takes off or descends, headaches develop. Most often, a headache in an airplane occurs due to the difference in barometric pressure in the paranasal sinuses (frontal, maxillary) and atmospheric pressure in the cabin during landing and takeoff.
The paranasal sinuses are filled with air, which has the same pressure as the air pressure in the environment around a person. The sinuses communicate with the nasal cavity through a special channel - the anastomosis, through which air from the atmosphere enters the sinuses. This allows you to freely equalize the pressure when its indicators fluctuate. During takeoff and landing, the barometric pressure in the cabin of the aircraft changes, which leads to a gradual change in the pressure in the paranasal sinuses, but if the anastomosis is narrowed or blocked, then the process of equalizing the pressure is difficult or completely impossible. Violation of the synchronization of atmospheric pressure and causes headache attacks.
The reasons for a blocked anastomosis can be different: chronically recurring sinusitis (allergic or infectious), cysts or polyps, pathological changes in the anastomosis (congenital or acquired as a result of nasal injuries).
If it was noticed that the head hurts on the plane precisely during takeoff or landing, then it is worth taking measures to prevent such headaches before the flight: to bury the nose with vasoconstrictor drops before the flight (and during the flight), which will temporarily relieve nasal congestion with mucus. This will help prevent headaches during the flight in the case of chronic or acute rhinitis of various etiologies . But if the problems lie not in the inflammatory process of the mucous membrane, but in the mechanical blocking of air access to the sinuses, then you need to worry in advance about the diagnosis of possible causes and their elimination.
There are other causes of headaches after a flight. Hypotension, hypertension, or a tendency to increase intracranial pressure can also cause headaches in flight. Disorders of well-being and attacks of headaches during flights are also characteristic of meteorological people.
