Poisoning with fusel oils - signs and help.
Fusel oils are by-products of the alcoholic fermentation reaction, or rather monohydric fatty alcohols with admixtures of ethers, aldehydes, acids, furfural and other substances with toxic properties. In alcohol production, fusel oil fractions are separated during distillation and used in the perfumery and chemical industries for the preparation of fragrances and solvents.
Fusel oils impart yellow or orange tints to alcoholic products, which allows you to see by eye whether there is an impurity of fusel oils in the alcoholic product.
Even in a minimal amount, fusel oils that enter the body cause toxic damage to the body. The signs of fusel oil poisoning are similar to those of a hangover and food poisoning:
- Headache develops;
- Dizziness is possible due to the rapidly expanding blood vessels of the brain;
- Dry mouth appears;
- Cough, increased salivation, lacrimation are possible;
- There is an urge to vomit or vomit;
- There is irritation of the oral mucosa and stomach up to pain syndrome;
- There is a feeling of deafening;
- Loss of consciousness, respiratory failure are possible;
- In difficult cases, a toxic coma develops, which is dangerous with a lethal outcome.
First aid for suspected poisoning with fusel oils is carried out by washing the stomach with a solution of baking soda. Further, all measures for detoxification of the body are carried out in a hospital setting, since they require intravenous administration of an antidote, support of water and electrolyte balance (droppers with infusion solutions), prevention of pulmonary edema, hepatic and renal failure.
