Night sweats - when to sound the alarm?
Who hasn't woken up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat at least once? And the horror movie watched the day before may have nothing to do with it. Night sweats are an integral part of the body's endocrine system during sleep.
When we sleep, metabolic processes in the body continue their course: the food eaten the day before is absorbed, energy is produced to maintain brain activity and heating of internal organs, heat exchange is regulated.
But it matters how much you sweat: you are sweating a little or your sleeping clothes are wet. Night sweats should alert you when you feel that you wake up in a "pool of water", when your body gets wet even when you are cool, not hot.
Excessive sweating at night always indicates serious problems in the body (after all, during sleep, a person does not experience physical exertion, which is usually accompanied by loss of moisture):
- About hormonal disruptions, which can be both the result of restructuring the body to work in a different mode (pregnancy, menopause, menstruation), and a symptom of endocrine disease (diabetes mellitus, thyroid disease, hypo- or hypervitaminosis, micronutrient deficiency, diseases of the endocrine glands - pancreas, adrenal glands and many other endocrine disorders that may be latent).
- A possible temporary rise in body temperature, when the body thus begins to fight an infection (for example, a chronic infection that is asymptomatic).
- About congestion of muscle tissue and the impossibility of its complete relaxation (due to excessive physical exertion during wakefulness). The muscles during sleep do not relax, but are in good shape, which provokes energy expenditure and sweating.
- About fluctuations in blood pressure during sleep.
- A decrease in blood glucose levels - hypoglycemia (for example, with strict diets).
- About the development of neoplasms, when no other symptoms are observed (after all, the initial stages of cancer are usually asymptomatic).
There are many reasons to be concerned if you sweat a lot at night. And this is a reason to consult a doctor in order to stop a quietly developing disease in time and maintain health.
