Pneumoperitoneum - what is it?
Pneumoperitoneum is a medical procedure used in phthisiology to restrict the movement of the diaphragm.
The method is used to treat pulmonary diseases (including tuberculosis), with pneumothorax, pulmonary bleeding, in the postoperative period to correct the volume of the pleural cavity (for example, when excising lung tissue, lung resection) and other diseases that require temporary limitation of the lung volume.
Pneumoperitoneum is also performed for the purpose of X-ray contrast of the abdominal organs during diagnosis. Pneumoperitoneum, used to diagnose the gastrointestinal tract or internal genital organs, allows you to identify tumors, pathological displacement of organs, anomalies in the structure of organs.
Pneumoperitoneum involves pumping gas into the abdominal cavity to raise the diaphragm and reduce lung volume by about 700 ml, lifting the diaphragm to the level of the fourth rib is considered successful.
By artificially reducing the volume of the lungs, conditions are created for the development of lymphostasis and hypoxia, which, for example, prevent the multiplication of mycobacterium tuberculosis and the absorption of toxin, limit the focus of inflammation in the lungs, to limit respiratory function in cases of injuries and lung operations.
The procedure for pneumoperitoneum is performed after emptying the bowel and bladder on an empty stomach. For the procedure, carbon dioxide or oxygen is used.
Pneumoperitoneum is not performed in cases of damage to the abdominal organs, operations performed on the abdominal organs, diseases of the abdominal organs, lack of patient weight (exhaustion), with respiratory and heart failure.
