Why does shortness of breath appear?
Shortness of breath or shortness of breath occurs in people of different ages. The most harmless situation when shortness of breath appears is brisk walking or running of an untrained person. Then they say that the person was "out of breath" - he began to breathe often and heavily. In such cases, shortness of breath is just a compensatory reaction of the body to the increased work of the heart, which supplies the brain with oxygen and, accordingly, makes the respiratory organs work faster for accelerated gas exchange.
Shortness of breath, which occurs when you carry heavy things or bend over to put on shoes, or are simply nervous, is not dangerous. Shortness of breath often accompanies acute respiratory infections, in which the bronchi and lungs are affected, and the capabilities of the respiratory system are disturbed to some extent due to the filling of the airways with mucus.
But if shortness of breath appears at rest, with leisurely walking or lying down, then you need to sound the alarm.
Difficulty breathing can result from:
- an allergic reaction (speedy), when it is important to have time to administer an antihistamine before choking occurs;
- arrhythmias or other cardiac disorders when drugs are required to restore cardiovascular functions;
- lung disease, which can lead to impaired respiratory function in general;
- poisoning by gaseous substances trapped in the surrounding atmosphere;
- a foreign object entering the airways partially blocking them.
The above cases of shortness of breath require ambulance and even, possibly, mechanical ventilation. So a symptom such as shortness of breath should not be neglected.
