Erysipeloid - what is it?
Erysipeloid is an infectious disease similar to erysipelas. With erysipeloid, the skin and joints are affected. The disease develops as a result of infection with the gram-positive bacterium Bacillus erysipelotrix phusiopathie. The bacterium lives on spoiled meat, fish or seafood, and can also be found on grass debris, in soil, water, and on the skin of wild and domestic animals infected with the bacterium. The entrance gates of infection with erysipeloid are violations of the integrity of the skin and joint injuries (cracks, abrasions, cuts, punctures, scratches, abrasions). The risk group includes workers who cut meat or fish, cooks, veterinarians, housewives. Erysipeloid is not transmitted from person to person.
Erysipeloid signs:
- Burning and itching sensation on the skin of the hand (most often the hand),
- Inflammation of the skin of the hand (can spread to the joints) with redness and swelling, which disappear on their own after a few days,
- Subfebrile temperature.
Distinguish between cutaneous and dermal - articular forms of erysipeloid. In the case of the skin-articular form, the interphalangeal joints of the hand are involved in the inflammatory process (redness and swelling are observed). The cutaneous form of erysipeloid lasts no more than ten days, the cutaneous - articular form is about two weeks. There is also an anginal form of erysipeloid (resembles a sore throat in symptoms) and a generalized form, in which the bacterium spreads from the lesion to various parts of the body with lymph flow and blood flow, which is characterized by multiple cutaneous erythema (redness) and general intoxication of the body.
Treatment of erysipeloid is carried out on the basis of a diagnostic laboratory study with the identification of the pathogen and determination of its degree of sensitivity to drugs - antibiotics. Along with antibacterial therapy, detoxification measures are carried out, anti-inflammatory and antihistamines are prescribed.
