Eosinophils and eosinophilia.
Often, reading the result of a blood test that has fallen into the hands, its curious owner asks the question, what are eosinophils, the number of which in the blood is increased?
Eosinophils are a group of leukocytes produced by hematopoietic organs in certain dangerous conditions:
- Allergies,
- Latent inflammatory processes,
- Infections of viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic etiology,
- The development of tumors (benign and malignant).
Eosinophils are blood markers that signal to the doctor about the presence of any of the above processes, sometimes occurring in a latent form.
The role of eosinophils in the body is very important, since these blood cells are able to penetrate beyond the vascular wall (leave the bloodstream) and accumulate in the foci of inflammation, damaged tissues, in places where toxic substances accumulate, where they capture histamine, toxins or foreign proteins, destroying them and carrying away decay products from places of inflammation, infection, etc. For this ability, eosinophils are called microphages, because they have similar properties with phagocytes.
An increased amount of eosinophils in the blood is called eosinophilia. Eosinophilia can indicate the presence in the body of helminths, inflammation of internal organs, drug intolerance, the development of dermatosis and a number of other diseases.
