What are telescopic crowns?
When choosing among various designs of removable dentures, you should pay attention to dentures with telescopic crowns. Due to telescopic fixation, such prostheses acquire the features of both removable and non-removable prostheses.
Despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of prostheses on telescopic crowns are plastic removable partial prostheses with a certain number of preserved teeth, it is worth paying attention to bridges with telescopic crowns, which turn from fixed structures into removable ones when it is necessary to remove the prosthesis.
The telescopic crown got its name from the imitation of the structure of a telescope, which is retractable by a system of tubes entering one another. The telescopic crown system consists of two crowns: a cap, which is fixedly fixed on the ground tooth and has a cylindrical or trapezoidal shape, and a crown that covers this cap and is part of the design of the removable denture itself. This crown can be made of metal (stamped, cast) or it can be combined (metal - plastic, metal - ceramic). The superficial crown follows the anatomical shape of the tooth and, if veneered with plastic or ceramic, can perfectly match the color of your teeth. It is also acceptable to make telescopic crowns for implants.
The advantages of telescopic crowns:
- no need to install a clasp system in a removable denture, which is visible on your teeth,
- no need to remove the denture at night (remove only for hygienic cleaning),
- it is always possible, when removing an abutment tooth under a telescopic crown, to replace it with an artificial tooth and weld it into the prosthesis without redoing it,
- they look aesthetically more organic in the mouth due to the ability of the main (upper crown) to be made approximately in the shape and color of natural teeth.
Disadvantages of telescopic crowns:
Over time, the crowns rub against each other (the upper crown to the cap) and the fastening may loosen, slide freely up and down.
The manufacture of a telescopic crown system does not require special technological devices and therefore is not an expensive type of prosthetics.
