Metal removable dentures - what is it?
In prosthetics with removable dentures, there is a technology for making the base of the prosthesis not from plastic, but from metal. Such removable dentures are called - "Partial dentures with a cast metal base", and they are a modification of the design of traditional clasp dentures.
Metal removable dentures are used for partial loss of teeth, and their design feature is a combination of a removable denture with a cast metal base, a clasp denture with a system of support-retaining clasps and plastic bases for installing plastic teeth. The model of a metal cast removable denture has several advantages over a conventional plastic removable denture, which are to reduce the length of the prosthetic base and reduce its thickness due to metal casting, which reduces the inconvenience caused by the thickness of the plastic base and provides faster adaptation to the prosthesis. The choice of the design of a metal removable prosthesis depends on:
- from the jaw on which it is located (upper or lower);
- on the type and location of the defect of the dentition;
- on the shape and depth of the configuration of the palate of the upper jaw;
- from the shape of the alveolar process of the upper and lower jaws;
- on the height of the teeth (dentitions) on which the cast metal parts of the removable denture structure will rest,
- from the placement of the reflexogenic zones of the tongue and the degree of compliance of the oral mucosa.
When creating dental removable metal prostheses, the presence of allergic reactions to dyes of plastic parts of the prosthesis is taken into account. And in this regard, such structures can be made with colorless plastic base parts (transparent colorless plastic is hypoallergenic).
A contraindication to the use of a cast metal base design in removable dentures is:
- the presence of strongly pronounced bone protrusions in the area of the cast metal base (palatine torus and exostoses on the upper jaw or exostoses on the lower jaw);
- individual allergic reaction to metals.
Dentures with cast metal bases are modern methods in removable dentures. Such prostheses make it possible to lighten the design of a removable prosthesis by weight and distribute the load evenly between the teeth and the prosthesis bed, do not disturb speech and do not interfere with the movement of the tongue. The positive characteristics of this type of structures contribute to a faster patient's adaptation to the prosthesis and do not cause discomfort during subsequent use.
Metal removable dentures don’t break during use, don’t break if the denture accidentally falls on the floor (as similar one-piece plastic dentures), which contributes to their long-term use.
