Retinoids - a role in the treatment of skin conditions.
Retinoids are vitamin A analogues . Considering that vitamin A has high reparative properties and is able to accelerate regenerative processes, as well as influence the rate of metabolic reactions, regulate the production of sebum, it is retinoids that are able to control many pathological processes in tissues.
The effect of retinoids on inflammatory processes is compared with the effect of corticosteroids (in terms of the degree of effectiveness), since retinoids increase the mobility of leukocytes in inflammatory foci, which leads to a decrease in inflammation.
Retinoids have found application in dermatology for the treatment of various skin diseases accompanied by increased production of sebum (acne, seborrhea, lipoma). The drugs of the group of systemic retinoids: tretinoin and isotretinoin, which are involved in regenerative processes not only at the local level, but also affect the regenerative mechanisms of tissues in a generalized manner, turned out to be clinically tested and effective.
Retinoids are used both orally and externally in the form of creams, ointments, gels, and application fluids. The use of retinoids is usually accompanied by side effects, the most common of which is an increase in dry skin and increased keratinization of the skin. This is due to the very action inherent in the nature of retinoids - to accelerate the regeneration of skin cells, and therefore to promote the speedy processes of death and exfoliation of the surface epithelium.
Less common side effects are alopecia (hair loss), itching, dry mucous membranes. Regardless of the side effects, retinoids are used as medications when the positive effect they create outweighs the negative side effects.
