Gambling addiction - how to get rid of it?
Gambling addiction or painful irresistible attraction to games belongs to the category of pathological addictions or addictions of a non-chemical nature.
According to psychiatrists, the reasons for gambling addiction are associated with several factors:
- getting the body pleasure from the adrenaline rush at the moments of winning,
- obtaining material benefits when gambling for money,
- incorrect assessment of the potential for winning by the brain and the development of confidence in the controllability of the game situation,
- the habit of spending time in an entertaining form, receiving dividends from this,
- an easy opportunity to get rich adds a spice to the pastime in games.
Signs of gambling addiction:
- constant poorly overcome desire to spend time in games,
- narrowing of interests to the world of games,
- if it is impossible to participate in the fantasy game of big wins,
- thoughts are occupied only with the process of playing,
- irritation, anxiety in the absence of a game process,
- a state of euphoria from winning.
Gambling addiction is not chemical, but psychological, for this reason the person suffering from gambling addiction is sure that he can quit playing at any time. But the state of his psyche lets him down at the moment when he sees other players, gambling establishments or watches movies about games.
It is almost impossible to get rid of gambling addiction on your own. The postponement of the moment of the game is filled with fantasies about games. Abstaining from games based on promises to relatives, as a result of lack of money or lack of opportunity to play, does not lead to weaning from the desire to play. Losses, no matter how high, do not stop the gambler, they only postpone the next step to the game in the absence of funds to pay for the loss.
Often gambling addicts commit crimes in order to continue the opportunity to play, removing obstacles from their path, but often gambling ends up badly for the gambler himself: not having their own mental strength to stop the endless process of the game, gambling addicts are prone to suicide, which puts gambling addiction on a par with mental diseases.
Treatment of gambling addiction - complex (medication and psychotherapeutic). Doctors - psychiatrists attach great importance in treatment to methods of hypnotic influence, conversations with a gambling addict, trying to gradually change his worldview, to reveal thinking errors, thanks to which uncritical thinking develops in relation to the real situation with games.
Psychological conversations in groups with people who have already got rid of a similar addiction help in the fight against gambling addiction. The main goal of gambling addiction treatment is to free the gambling addict from misconceptions about his role in the winning processes, to return his thinking to the realities of life, to make him doubt his own righteousness regarding successful coincidences.
