How to deal with migraines?
Migraine is a type of headache that differs from other types of headache by the difficulty in relieving pain.
Migraine headache can last up to several days, becomes unbearable, exhausts the body: nervous, cardiovascular, digestive system.
How to distinguish migraines from other headaches?
There are two types of migraine: with and without aura.
Migraine with aura begins gradually, the pain symptom sometimes increases over several days. At the same time, harsh sounds, smells, light irritate and intensify the pain syndrome. There are flashes of light before the eyes, light circles, blinding eyes and intensifying pain.
A migraine without an aura can have the same symptoms, but without blinding outbreaks.
For migraine, the localization of pain on one side of the head is typical, attacks of nausea and vomiting are possible.
Conventional pain relievers do not relieve migraine headaches, and a painful symptom blocker that is not taken in time leads to the fact that later the headache – migraine is difficult to stop.
The reasons for the development of a migraine-type headache are not thoroughly understood, but there are several theories regarding which migraine develops due to:
- a sharp narrowing and expansion of blood vessels,
- due to disruption of neural connections between the trigeminal nerve and the vessels of the brain,
- due to increased intracranial pressure.
The factors provoking the development of a migraine attack are multiple:
- freezing (hypothermia of the head),
- stressful situation,
- intense mental activity,
- excessive physical activity,
- and many other factors in which the work of the vessels of the brain and nerve cells in the head area is involved.
Often, a migraine-type headache accompanies the beginning and / or end of the menstrual cycle, which, according to experts, is associated with a change in estrogen levels.
How to deal with migraines? In order to stop the pain symptom of migraine in time, you need to learn to notice the first signs that indicate that a headache is on the way.
To relieve the pain symptom of migraine, special preparations based on triptans have been developed, which are considered effective anti-migraine agents. Sometimes a sedative or antidepressant is given along with the pain reliever, which can enhance the effects of the pain reliever.
Home remedies for migraine pain:
- a heating pad or hot towel on the forehead and temples,
- tightening the belt of the frontal-temporal region of the head - helps to reduce the intensity of the headache,
- blackout in the room where the migraine sufferer is located,
- bed rest without watching TV and electronic gadgets.
There is a cardinal solution to the problem with the occurrence of migraines associated with a malfunction of the trigeminal nerve - the facial muscle responsible for "frowning" is surgically incised (the branch of the trigeminal nerve approaches it). Thus, the branch of the facial nerve leading to the frontal part of the head ceases to interact with the muscle and provoke a headache, which permanently relieves a person from migraine attacks.
For a preliminary check of the effectiveness of this method, the facial muscle is immobilized with an injection of Botox for several months and it is monitored whether migraine develops. In the absence of seizures, an operation is performed.
