What is a neuroma?
The proliferation of connective tissue in the area of the nerve as a result of the proliferation of connective tissue cells is called "neuroma".
Proliferation of connective tissue provokes nerve injury, forms thickening and, as a result of recurrent compression of the nerve, pain. Frequent cases of neuroma development in the metatarsal area of the toes. This type of injury occurs as a result of long-term wearing of high-heeled shoes, playing sports in tightly laced sneakers, when the foot is compressed in the transverse direction, or with the development of flat feet, when the arch of the foot flattens.
Diagnosis of foot neuroma is carried out visually and by palpation, deliberately squeezing the foot in the metatarsal region.
Signs of a foot neuroma:
- pain in the metatarsal area (often unbearable),
- change in gait with an uncomfortable load on a painful place,
- burning sensation in the metatarsal area with prolonged walking,
- numbness may occur.
In the early stages of neuroma development, it can be treated with conservative methods:
- pain relievers,
- orthopedic pads,
- isolating the site of nerve injury,
- physiotherapy,
- massage,
- refusal to wear uncomfortable shoes with narrow noses and high heels (forever).
In advanced cases, an incision is made in the ligament or part of the affected nerve is removed. In severe cases, the entire nerve in the metatarsal area of the 2, 3, 4 toes must be removed. But this kind of surgical intervention is rarely resorted to, as it leads to disturbances in walking, although it relieves of unbearable pain.
