How is cavernitis treated?
Cavernite Is an inflammation that develops in the cavernous bodies of the penis. The corpora cavernosa of the penis are designed to maintain and promote erectile function. Inflammation of the corpus cavernosum provokes a painful induration in the penis and disrupts its functionality - it causes erectile dysfunction. The inflammatory process in cavernitis can be limited to an area of one corpus cavernosum or have a diffuse shape. After some time and the absence of treatment, an infiltration forms in the area of inflammation and an abscess develops. An abscess can spontaneously open up, and purulent contents enter the lumen of the urethra. At the same time, pain symptoms decrease, and the general condition of the body improves. At the site of a resolved abscess, tissue scarring occurs, which will become a possible cause of deformation of the penis, which will complicate sexual intercourse, or make it almost impossible.
The causes of cavernitis are associated with trauma to the penis (including postoperative, due to intracavernous administration of drugs, due to catheterization of the bladder) or an infection that has penetrated into the cavernous body by the hematogenous or lymphogenous route, or from adjacent organs (for example, the urethra in chronic or acute urethritis).
Penile trauma can be accompanied by rupture of the corpus cavernosum , microcracks, through which the infection also penetrates into the corpus cavernosum and cause inflammatory reactions. The trauma itself (rupture of the corpus cavernosum) is also the cause of the onset of inflammation, but the presence of pyogenic pathogens at the site of injurywill give the inflammation a purulent course. Through the circulatory and lymphatic system, pathogens can spread from infectious foci and enter the cavernous bodies with angina, sinusitis, purulent diseases of the oral cavity, furunculosis, abscesses, carbuncles, phlegmon and other purulent - inflammatory processes.
Cavernitis signs:
- Sharp pain in the penis, which increases rapidly,
- The skin of the penis is hyperemic (reddened),
- The penis looks edematous and has a smooth surface as a result of the tension on the skin when it is swollen,
- There is an involuntary erection, not associated with sexual arousal,
- On palpation, a seal in the penis is felt, touching the penis causes an increase in pain.
- A cloudy, fetid content is secreted from the urethra, which indicates a breakthrough of the abscess.
Cavernitis is characterized by an acute or chronic course. In the chronic course of cavernitis, pain symptoms are not pronounced, and the healing processes of damaged tissues are delayed and make it possible to form connective tissue (fibrosis of the cavernous bodies) in places of injury , replacing healthy tissue. It is the chronically flowing cavernitis that is conducive to the formation of penile deformities.
Treatment of cavernitis should be started at the first sign of its development. First, a bacteriological study of microflora is carried out on the basis of a smear, scrapings, urine culture and discharge from the urethra. According to the identified pathogen, antimicrobial therapy is prescribed (often antibiotics of a wide spectrum of action are used for treatment, since there may be several causative agents of purulent infection). To support the immune system, immunostimulating agents are prescribed , anti-inflammatory drugs are used to accelerate the healing process and relieve swelling. With abscess formation of inflammation of the cavernous bodies, surgical intervention is performed - a deep dissection of the cavernous bodies and drainage of the focus of infection for the outflow of purulent exudate and convenience when processing with antiseptics and proteolytic enzymes.
Physiotherapy treatment can be carried out at the stage when the purulent course of the disease is stopped.
If the treatment was not carried out in a timely manner, the inflammatory process became neglected, and fibrous tissue managed to form at the site of healing, then surgical correction of the deformity of the penis is carried out up to endoprosthetics of the penis.
Cavernitis is a rather dangerous condition, which, if the treatment is started incorrectly and not in a timely manner, can lead not only to the loss of erectile function, but also to gangrene of the penis, which will end with its amputation, so you should not deal with the treatment of cavernitis on your own and at home.
