Perioral dermatitis - causes and treatment.
Perioral dermatitis is a polyetiologic skin disease affecting the skin of the face mainly in the chin, nasolabial folds, in the corners of the mouth or in areas near the outer corners of the eyes with the transition to the cheeks, on the eyelids. It manifests itself in the form of skin rashes (papules) in various combinations of affected skin areas. In addition to rashes on the skin in the affected areas, there is a feeling of tightness, burning. Sometimes skin rashes, in addition to external changes on the skin of the face, do not cause any additional sensations.
The study of the causes of the onset of perioral dermatitis made it possible to identify a group of factors that play an important role in the pathogenesis of the disease:
- Reducing the body's resistance to the effects of conditionally pathogenic microflora,
- Hypersensitivity of the skin to bacterial infections caused by thinning of the epidermis, violation of its barrier functions as a result of the use of ointments, creams, medicinal cosmetics containing corticosteroids,
- Hypersensitivity of the skin to allergens,
- Concomitant gastrointestinal diseases,
- Hormonal shifts,
- The presence of diseases of an autoimmune nature.
Treatment of perioral dermatitis is carried out in stages and begins with the identification and treatment of concomitant diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, metabolic disorders, gynecological diseases. An important role in the treatment is played by the support of immunity, the treatment of dysbiosis.
At the same time, drugs for external use and medical cosmetics containing corticosteroids are canceled. Antihistamines, metronidazole are prescribed.
Skin affected by perioral dermatitis requires protection from ultraviolet radiation, a traumatic factor. With perioral dermatitis, you should not treat the face skin with products that have a photosensitizing effect (causing skin hypersensitivity to ultraviolet radiation) - essential oils and herbal infusions (for example, St. John's wort) and other similar substances. It is necessary to refuse cosmetic cleaning of the face by any means (including scrubs), so as not to expose the skin of the face to microtraumas.
Diet plays a special role in the treatment of perioral dermatitis, which should include hypoallergenic food, a lot of fiber, fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins A, vitamin E and group B. When treating complex forms of perioral dermatitis, it is advisable to adhere to a vegetarian diet.
